Your First Few Weeks Wearing Braces

Getting braces is a momentous occasion in a child’s life. Not only is this treatment going to help them achieve a healthy, attractive smile, it is going to help them feel better and take better care of their teeth. Getting to these important goals can be intimidating, especially if a child has not known anyone with braces. Knowing what to do when you first get braces can make this period of adjustment much easier for children and parents. Adult and adolescent orthodontics patients will also find this information helpful for their first weeks wearing braces.

Managing Soreness and Discomfort

Regardless of what type of braces is used in treatment, some soreness following their placement is normal. Discomfort is most common on the second and third days following fitting, though soreness may persist into the fourth day to a lesser degree. After a week or two, most patients no longer experience any discomfort.

Soreness can be relieved with the help of a few different strategies, including:

  • Rinsing with warm salt water
  • Ibuprofen (Motrin)
  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
  • Advil

Parents should read the dosing instructions of over-the-counter pain relievers carefully to provide the amount of medication appropriate for the age and weight of their child.
